A crack starting within a few centimetres of the screen edge. These weaken the whole screen and usually mean a replacement.

Long crack

Any crack longer than around 15cm, or one that’s grown from an old chip. Replacement needed.

Stress crack

A crack that appears without any impact, often from extreme temperature changes. Replacement needed.

Will a repaired chip still be visible?

It will be much less noticeable, though a faint mark may remain. The main aim is to make the glass strong again and stop the chip spreading.

Can a chip spread overnight?

Yes. A cold night, a hot day or a bump in the road can turn a small chip into a long crack very quickly. That’s why it’s worth getting it repaired as soon as possible.

Can I drive with a cracked windscreen?

Not safely if the crack is in your line of sight. It can lead to a fine, penalty points and an MOT fail.

Will a chipped windscreen fail its MOT?

Damage larger than 10mm in the area directly in front of the driver, or larger than 40mm elsewhere in the area the wipers clear, is an MOT fail.

Does my insurance cover windscreen repair and replacement?

Most comprehensive policies include glass cover. Repairs are often free, and replacements usually just cost your excess. It often won’t affect your no claims bonus, but check your policy.

Will a new windscreen be as good as the original?
